Lasers are becoming more and more useful in many areas of medicine. Dental care is no exception.
When periodontal disease develops, laser therapy provides excellent results and faster healing.
Gingivitis and periodontitis are the two forms of periodontal disease. Gingivitis is the mildest form of inflammation of the gums and bones surrounding the teeth. Periodontitis is more severe and can lead to tooth loss.
Bacteria and plaque are directly linked to periodontal disease. The bacteria accumulate and form plaque. The body begins to fight the presence of bacteria with antibodies. In turn, the antibodies invade the soft tissues in the mouth. If allowed to progress, the invasion forms pockets around the teeth. Food and debris build up in the pockets, leading to more bacteria accumulation and the production of more antibodies. More pockets form, and the cycle continues. Early treatment is best to avoid tooth loss.
Gingivitis is first treated with scaling, root planing, and antibiotics. Periodontitis may require laser treatment to cut back the gum tissues to allow for deep cleaning of the tooth roots (called gum flap surgery). The gum flap is then replaced with sutures and allowed to heal.
