Over the years, eating, drinking, and bad habits such as smoking can take a toll on the color and overall appearance of your tooth enamel. Left untreated, the outer layer of your teeth can crack and chip away, revealing stains and other cosmetic imperfections. General dentist Kim Paukune, DDS, and the team at Tucson Premier Smiles regularly use veneers to restore their patients’ smiles. Venners Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are wafer-thin shells of porcelain or composite resin that mimic the color and texture of your natural, permanent teeth.

Your dentist applies veneers to the outer surface, or enamel, of your teeth, improving their aesthetic appearance.

What are the benefits of veneers?

Veneers are regularly used in cosmetic dentistry to address different types of cosmetic imperfections, including:

  • Broken and chipped teeth
  • Yellow, stained, and discolored teeth
  • Gaps or missing teeth
  • Pointy, crooked, or unusually-shaped teeth

In some cases, dental veneers are also used to treat microdontia, a medical condition characterized by having teeth that are smaller than normal.

Am I a candidate for veneers?

The only way to determine whether or not you’re a candidate for veneers is to schedule a consultation at Tucson Premier Smiles.

During your initial consultation, your provider reviews your medical history and takes an X-ray of your teeth and gums to evaluate their health. Tucson Premier Smiles also uses the iTero® digital scanner to get a perfect 3D image of your teeth.

If you’re a good candidate, your dentist then applies a topical anesthetic to your gums before shaving a fine layer of enamel from the surface of your teeth and taking a mold. Once finished, these molds are sent to a laboratory where your veneers are manufactured.

How are veneers applied to my teeth?

About two to four weeks after your first appointment, you’ll return to the Tucson Premier Smiles office to have your veneers applied.

Prior to cementing your veneers, your dentist carefully adjusts them to match your smile and then bonds them using a medical-grade cement.

How do I care for my veneers?

Taking care of your veneers is easy and stress-free. Simply brush and floss them like you would your natural teeth and visit Tucson Premier Smiles once every six months for a professional cleaning and exam.

How long do veneers last?

Dental veneers are incredibly durable, but they won’t last forever. On average, it’s recommended you upgrade your veneers every 7-15 years.
